I wanted to show you where we are on our stair progress....and I say we....cuz hubby was kind enough to help me finish ripping up the carpeting....he's my knight in shining armor....or better yet....my handyman in jeans. But first I thought I'd share with you a couple photos from my pin board on Pinterest that are my inspiration.

Can you see where I'm going with this project....I love stripes and ticking.

Okay....so here's where we're at. The carpets all pulled off.....and the wood steps are actually in really good condition....they just need a little bit of wood filler, caulking and some sanding.

There was only one board that we had to replace.....and see the landing in the photo up there....we're going to remove the press board that's there and add a planked wood landing instead.

I do believe I'm gonna love how this turns out.....that is of course if it looks like either one of the top photos.

And can I just say.....now that I removed the carpet on the stairs....and I'm lovin' it....I wonder how I can convince the hubby that we need to remove the rest of the carpet in the basement....hmmm.

So here's my next project.....a stair redo.

These are the stairs that lead to my basement....and if you read my blog, you know I do not like this carpet....it's very "office" looking....and I'm just not going for the "office" look. What am I doing you ask.....

I'm ripping the carpet off the stairs and painting them. This is something I've been wanting to do for a long time now.....and am so excited to see how it comes out. I also have a unique idea to change up the hand rail too.....but let's first see if it works out before I let you in on that little secret.

I'll be back later this week to show you a couple of my inspiration photos for this little makeover....and my progress so far. You know....ripping carpet off stairs isn't as easy as I thought....I'm so gonna need a manicure after this.

I changed up the lighting in my kitchen this weekend...cuz you know...it's been a year...and I'm sure by now you've learned nothing lasts much longer than a year in here. So I thought I'd see if anybody was interested in buying these Barn Light Electric pendants. The pendant above is a dark green 16" (which is actually more like 15 1/2") Radial Wave Light from Barn Electric....you can check it out on their website here. It retails for $169.00...I'm selling mine for $99.00 plus shipping.

The pendant above is called the Barn Light Deep Bowl Pendant and is also from Barn Light Electric....you can check it out on their website here. It too is dark green and measures 8" across. It retails for $84.00...I'm selling mine for $49.00 plus shipping.

a boys room

I just wanted to make this disclaimer.....these photos stink.....my little point-n-click camera did not do this room justice. It really looks much cuter in person...but I wanted to share with you what I've done so far in my sons room....okay let's move on....

This is my youngest sons room....a mix of farmhouse, industrial and sci-fi.

I spent a total of $56.00 for his makeover....that included $30.00 for some vintage accessories...$20.00 for the Yoda quote on his wall and $6.00 for a can of spray paint. Most of the free changes came way of paint...which I already had on hand. The photo above shows his old dresser given a new look with chalkboard paint...every boy needs a little help staying organized....and writing what belongs where in his drawers has helped a lot!

Below is a photo of his bookcase (which we already had)....it's just one of those cheap $45.00 bookcases from Target. To make it work in his new room...I just sanded it....primed it and painted it Grey Owl by Ben Moore. You can see in the pic above that it's still black inside....and being that it's FULL of Legos I needed some way of covering it up while still being easy to access....viola...a linen curtain (which I already had) on a tension rod worked great. Oh...and see that super cool vintage globe on the bookcase....that came way of Mary....thanks a million Mary....he loves it!

I also painted his bed Grey Owl...and the walls are painted in Seashell by Ben Moore....yep....I had that already too. I finally got around to painting his trim and doors white too (they were previously wood)....that made such a huge difference in there.

And here's were a little bit of ticking came in....the rug is Dash & Albert (had it already), the french ticking pillow on the white chair (had already) and his bedding is a light blue and white ticking duvet...yep...you guessed it....had that already too. The white euro sham is from my collection of euro shams and the grey cross pillow I purchased from here some time ago. And not that it's that noticeable, but I also spray painted his poster frames with Hammered by Rustoluem. They were previously black, but I wanted them to have a metal industrial look...I'm really happy with how those turned out.

Every boy needs some place to showcase is artwork....cuz the fridge can only hold so much....so here's were he can display what he's done in school.

And lastly.....here's his desk area. The desk is actually a potting bench that I already had and I just painted it with the same Grey Owl and added a metal stool I had in the garage. He loves his desk....it's high like an architects desk...and he thinks that's so cool. The metal painters tray hanging above his desk is were he keeps his Lego mini figures. He just loves that he reach for one without having to look through his huge box of Legos to find them (the large white box to the left of his desk is were we keep his Legos).....plus I think it makes for some great art.

So there you have it....a peek into a boys farmhouse/sci-fi room. I really tried to keep his personality in the room....hence the Star Wars toys scattered about....but with a little bit of farmhouse mixed in. He gave me rave reviews on his room....and actually spends time up there now. Although I think our couch will miss him...you see...he used to never sleep in his room....he said it was too far from my room, so the couch became his bed. But now he enjoys his room so much....that he sleeps in there every night....now that alone tells me I did a pretty good job.

Let's see....first I'd like to wish you all a very Happy New Year....and I hope that this year brings you much joy and love.....because that is what you have all brought to me.

Now....on to some randomness.....

like....um....where's the snow? it's only snowed once so far....what's up with that.

I'm waiting for my boys to go back to school in a couple days so that I can get my cleaning and painting on.

I'm still thinking about my basement....and what I can do to make it more me. I'm thinking some painting and rearranging is in order.

My son's bedroom is pretty much done....but ya know....is it really ever done....so I'll be sharing that with you soon.

I'm already thinking about spring....is that wrong?

I promised myself that this is the year I finally do something with my big ol' wrap around porch ....any ideas.

That's about it for now.....

But I did want to give a big thank you to Beth Livesay and everyone at Romantic Homes magazine for featuring my blog and bathroom in their January 2012 issue....I'm honored.

Okay....really....that's it for now....except that I have lots of ideas in my head of new projects for my home....and I can't wait to share them all with you.

I'd like to introduce you to a new member of our family....meet Mia.

She's an early Christmas present to our boys. They have both been wanting a little dog for some time now....so after looking for a little while....we stumbled upon this little love bug.

Now...I'm not a small dog person...I love me a big dog...but Mia is the exception. She is the sweetest, gentle little dog...and by little....I mean 3.3 pounds....and has become my boys little angel.

And if your wondering what breed she is....she's a 4 month old long hair chihuahua.

I also wanted to take a moment to wish you all the Merriest Christmas and to thank you for taking the time to stop in and read my blog.

I've been quite busy the last couple weeks....but I should be back to normal posting soon.

I'm still working on my sons room...not everyday mind you....just a little here and a little there.

Let's see....what else is new....Oh yeah, I have lots to add to my etsy shop....some of which will be added next week.

Hmmmm....what else....I'm in dire need of some new decorating books....anyone have a good one to recommend?

boy inspiration

Here's just a few of the things I've found to insert some farmhouse/industrial decor into my sons room....

an old painters tray....metal wire baskets....and a super cool old metal plane....thanks Laura!

The large white box is what we keep his Legos in and I think it goes great with his new finds.

So...I'm hoping I'll be done painting his room in the next couple days....only to begin painting his bed and desk....so it'll be a little longer before I can show it to you...but by giving you a peek at what I'll fill his room with....you'll get an idea of what direction I'm going in.

As much as I love painting....after a week of it....I'm kinda pooped....and I'm still not done.

I mean....I love painting furniture and watching it go from ho hum to wow in a couple hours....but painting moldings and doors....not so much.

The boys rooms are the only two rooms that I had yet to paint the molding or doors....they're still wood....so in an effort to have the whole house more cohesive....I'm painting them now....well at least one of them.

So that's where I am....still painting....ugly baseboards and doors....

have I mentioned I don't like painting moldings and windows and doors....well I don't ;o)

And the photos above have nothing to do with this post....I just took them to share with you because I thought you'd rather see those than ugly primed doors....or my new white painted on highlights ;o)

boys farmhouse bedroom

After trying to find some boys farmhouse stye bedrooms for inspiration....I noticed.....that there really aren't any.

What I did find for inspiration.....was some blue ticking bedding.....I think it screams farmhouse....and I think it would be perfect for my 8-year old son.

I plan on having my hubby build him a desk....and adding some industrial farmhouse style accents.

My son did say his Godzilla and Star Wars posters had to stay....and that we may need to add some dinosaurs in the mix {because he wants to be a Paleontologist}.

Sounds like quite the eclectic mix....a little farmhouse....a little sci-fi....and a sprinkle of prehistoric.

a peek into....

I thought I'd show you some newer photos of my bedroom today.

There's not many photos because the room is pretty small....being it's an old farmhouse....most of the rooms in the house are small.

There's only 3 pieces of furniture in here ( and a couple accent pieces).....as I wanted to try to keep it as light and airy as I could. The truth is....I really don't need much in here....as I don't like t.v.'s or phones in my room....so basically I just need someplace to set a book down....and hold our jeans.

a new farmtable

My hubby finished my farmtable a little over a week ago.....and I'm in love.

It's everything I wanted it to be....a little rustic to play off the chandelier....and made by his hands.

I love that it's much more narrow than my old farmtable....it's so much better for conversation....not to mention passing the mashed potatoes.

I love the planked top and chunky square legs.

I decided to keep the top natural (with a coat of wax for protection) and just paint the bottom half.

Here's one of the details I love most about the table....hubby inserted dowels on the top were the screws are to make it look like it had been put together with wood only. I also think it makes it look like it may have been a barn door....which I love.

So....there it is....my farmtable....loving made for me by my "I can make anything" hubby.

Earlier this week Sarah from My Yellow House came over for a visit and I took her to a couple of my favorite hunting spots. Here's what I found....this super cool melamine tray....

I love the color and texture of it....it'll be perfect by the fire to hold our smores supplies....and it only cost $1.00....score!

And this lovely platter came home with me too. I have a couple covered casserole dishes that look very much like this one....love the muted blue color....and at $3.95....I couldn't pass it up. Can you say.....score again!

And lastly......these 2 farmhouse beauties found their way to my truck as well. I love them for so many reasons....the white paint.....the spindle legs....the fact that they match. Milking stools are surprisingly hard to find here....or at least they are for me....so when I saw these, I just knew I had to have them. They fit perfectly with my new farmtable (which I'll be posting about very soon) and the seats on them are quite large....so these would also make perfect side tables for some adirondack chairs by the fire.

Well....that's all for my finds....but I did find a few to add to my etsy shop too. And as for Sarah....she did good too. She found some gorgeous linens....like a beautiful white linen bed sheet (it's so yummy) and a pair of darling pillow covers embroidered with red...they are so cute!

a new coffee table

After almost a year without a coffee table....I'm happy to say that I now have a place to rest my....well....coffee.

The cost....$3.00.....we had all that we needed but one piece of wood. So after the hubby built it for me....I dry brushed it with a beautiful shade of grey paint I had on hand called Grey Owl by Benjamin Moore.

Here's what it looked like before it got it's little makeover.

Next up.....a farmtable.

My 15-year old son....a chef in training.

For the last couple of years now he has mentioned that he'd like to be a chef....and there's no better time to start practicing....than right now. He went through my cooking books, magazines and online and came up with a few dishes he'd like to try....and here's a great one he'd like to share with you.

Sirloin Steak with Mushroom Marsala Sauce and homemade french fries

The sauce adds so much to the steak....I don't even care for mushrooms....but I loved this sauce. And I love that he's found something that he's really interested in....I want to encourage him to keep it up....he's actually very good at it.....and on a more selfish note....it's so nice to have someone else cook for me once in a while.

You know....I could really get use to this.

We'll be sharing more recipes with you as he tries them.

Here's some fresh new items that I've just added to my etsy shop....like this super cute enamel colander...I have one just like it and use it all the time to rinse my fruits and veggies.

some metal flower frogs....

and a darling set of scalloped ironstone butter pats...love these! I use my old butter pats to hold olive oil for dipping crusty french bread....and I also use them to hold individual servings of syrup for french toast sticks....Oh....and you can of course use them for butter pats too.

Finally.....a little pretty for our dirt road.

Can I just say.....a nice shade of pink spray paint is not easy to find.....and with home improvement stores....a 60-mile round trip.....and having to go back 3 times to find the right shade of pink....well....let's just say this easy and cheap makeover has cost about $16.00 in ugly paint colors.....and $45.60 in gas.

So.....about 180 miles later.....I finally have a soft pink mailbox.....and it just well may be the most expensive mailbox in town.

I just can't get it right

I've been trying.....for some time now.....to decorate my basement.

Above is my living room and I love the farmhouse feel it has.....

lots of white....with little pops of color that I can change out whenever I want. My living room.....to me.....matches my house.....farmhouse style.

This is my basement....which is our family and beyond the curtains is my office. Now, I know it probably looks okay....but what I don't like is that it feels like a different house....it doesn't feel farmhouse to me.

The space is great...it's wide open with nice big windows...but for some reason....I just can't get it right.

I really would love for it to match the upper part of my home....but alas, it doesn't. As of right now, it's a bit of a mess as I'm trying to figure out what to do with this space. The walls are painted a creamy white and I'm debating whether I need to paint them another color as maybe the color matches the carpet too much....and let's not talk about the carpet....I don't like....not one bit....but it needs to say for a few more years. We've also thought about adding some bead board or maybe stenciling a damask pattern onto the walls...just something to make it feel less basement like.

So there it is.....I'm trying to re-work our basement on a little tiny budget....and really don't know where to start.

Has that ever happened to you? One day your on a decorating roll....then you move to another room....and are just stumped....that's me right now.

I know all you guys have great style sense.....so what would you do with this space.....to make it feel more farmhouse.

has it really been that long

I didn't realize that I hadn't posted in 10 whole days....you must think I've been so busy....the truth is....I haven't. Here's some random things happening around the old house....

My sweet Ollie (one of our geese) died yesterday....my heart was broken. She somehow got her head stuck in the fence during the night and couldn't get out. I cried like a baby for my girl....who was such a pain in the butt...but had the sweetest personality....she will missed....a lot.

My boys started back to school today.....so postings should be more regular....yeah!

I've been a bit on the lazy side lately....with all the hot and humid weather we've been having....but for the last 5 days....the weather has been so nice and comfortable....so I'm hoping to get some projects done....should I finish any....I'll be sure to share them with you.

My yard sale was a FLOP.....2 people came....luckily one of them spent a couple hundred dollars...so I guess it was kinda worth having. But like I said...I live in the country, just outside of town on a dead end dirt road....so not much traffic gets out this way. So needless to say I was thankful for the people who came.

I added some new items to my etsy shop....I'm really going to try to add new things a couple times a week.

Going back to our animals.....we lost 1 hen and 3 roosters to a fox or raccoon or eagle (you get the picture). We let our chickens free range (although every night they all go into the chicken coop on their own and we close the door to keep them safe at night) and seems how they are locked up at night....it's during the day in the tall grass and wildflowers that something has snatched them away....we've had to get used to this kinda thing happening. When you own chickens and ducks (something took our ducks last year too) and let them be free....things like this just happen.

yard sale time

Yep.....it's time for a good ol' yard sale. I've only done one yard sale in my life....and that was years ago...so you can imagine what I've accumulated over those years. Actually we have a 1600 sf garage....and half of it is full of stuff to sell.

The yard sale is tomorrow and I've been busy getting everything together. I have a feeling because I don't live in town that it might not be that great of a sale....but I gotta start somewhere. That geese can walk up stairs....

I didn't until a couple weeks ago. We've had other geese....and none have been able to climb our porch stairs before....so imagine my surprise when I heard a faint knock at the door....only to find Ollie standing there waiting to come in.

She's become quite the ham....and a little bossy at times too. One of the main reasons for us getting geese was that we thought they'd stay off our porch...nothing like coming home in the dark only to step on the "gifts" Ollie's left behind for us....yuck.

In other news....I have some new things I'll be adding to my etsy this week...stay tuned.

Here's a peek at what I collected from my little garden today. It seems to me when you eat something you've nurtured....it just seems to taste better. I have l.o.a.d.s. of tomatoes that are just about ready to pick.....I see a tomato, basil and mozzarella salad in my future.

Like I need another one.....but this one is the most amazing shade of pale aqua....she fits my sofa perfectly.

I bought her a little while back while shopping with sweet Sarah (http://www.meandmyyellowhouse.blogspot.com/) remember....blogger won't let me link anymore...ugh.

See the cute enamel lunch pail...I love her too....every time I look at it, it reminds me of where I bought her....at a flea market in France. It was about 7 years ago that I was in Paris....shopping the flea markets and sipping on cafe au lait while admiring the Eiffel Tower....I so need to go back.

This is just a photo of my pink peonies....there a bloomin' right now....I love scattering them around the house....the beautiful shade of pink just makes me smile....and what's up with me and pink lately....I'm usually not a pink kinda girl....but I'm sure lovin' it right now.

Just wanted to show you a peek at how Ollie's doing...that's her by the pail. She's the sweetest goose....what's so cute is that she'd rather hang out with us then with Annabelle our other goose.

The photo above shows Annabelle doing her morning yoga.

And here are some of our wildflowers. 2 years ago we planted a ton of wildflower seeds on our hills...last year it was full of red poppies...this year we started out with purple flowers and now we have yellow....I love not knowing what's gonna pop up next.

pizza and pesto

That's what was on the menu for dinner tonight....pizza and pesto.

I gathered lots of fresh basil from my garden and made a yummy homemade pesto sauce....you can find the recipe here...oh wait....blogger won't let me link anymore....so you'll have to visit www.marthastewart.com and type in Basic Basil Pesto for the recipe.

Then....I made some homemade pizza dough from here...oh wait...that's right....I still can't link....can you tell that annoys me just a little bit....anyways....you can find the pizza dough recipe at www.thefarmchicks.typepad.com and look back to her post on June 10th for grilled pizza...it's a great pizza dough recipe.

And here it is.....I topped the pesto sauce with fresh slices of mozzerella and tomatoes and a few more leaves of basil....I love me some basil. It was yummy!

and the fact that they're a yummy shade of blue......makes them even better. I love adding a little industrial to the ol' farmhouse.

I haven't decided whether to keep'em or sell them in my etsy shop.....hmmmm.....decisions desicions.

Well....I really wouldn't call them chores....more like simple pleasures.

I gathered my supplies.....scissors....twine....and a basket.....

and then went to work....cutting fresh lavender from my garden.....and fresh eggs from my coop....

have I told you I love lavender....cuz I do. I especially love that I can go out my door and cut me a few bundles whenever I want....I really love that.

And nothing beats fresh farm eggs...I love those too!

See these little fellows....we found them under our house...along with our littlest missing hen.

About 3 weeks ago we noticed that our teeny tiny frizzle hen was missing....we thought for sure she was a goner. Then last week, my youngest son went under our porch and found Batgirl....and under her was a clutch of eggs.

We were going to throw the eggs out because we didn't know how long they had been there....but started doing some yard work and totally forgot to do it.

Well...thank goodness we didn't....because the next moring I heard a faint chirping sound and went to investigate....and there she was...Batgirl and 1 chick....then 2 chick.....3 chick.....4 chick.

We were so excited to see chicks hatched here....we can now actually be called a lil' hobby farm. Batgirl was doing good for a couple days with the chicks...but then she started pecking them a little too much...so we decided to bring them in the house to raise. We thought Batgirl would be sad to see them go....nope....she started running around like a free bird....I think I even heard her "YIPPEE" a couple times. I think she thought hatching them was enough work....she didn't want to raise them too.

We never thought we'd see any chicks hatched here because our hens are not very broody....they pretty much lay eggs and run....but Batgirl was a good momma and stayed with her eggs until they hatched.

So now I'd like to introduce you to our newest family members....

Okay....has it really been 11 days since I last posted....man....when the kiddos are home....time sure flies.

I can't really say I've been doin' much....just moving things around the ol' homestead....I can't seem to keep anything in a particular spot for very long....I know lots of you can relate. I'm also sluggishly trying to get my basement bathroom re-painted. I just painted it last year....but like rearranging my home...wall color doesn't usually stay the same too long either.

My buddy Mary also invited me to Pinterest....I played on it for a little while....and found some great inspiration....think pink....like my farmtable. I'll share what I'm painting pink soon. By the way....thanks Mary....I'm hooked ;o)

I did do a little fluffing in my shop today. I added a few new things and lowered the prices on others. I've got lots of cool new goods to add to my shop....and if the suns shining tomorrow...I'll get them photographed and listed this week.

dream finds

If you read my blog.....then you've heard me mention that Nebraska is not known for having flea markets. Being I was born and raised in California, every weekend was spent at some fantastic flea market....once we moved here.....basically....my flea market days were over. Now, I've come to find 2 flea markets here...yep that's right...a whopping 2! This weekend was the first one....and I have to say....I was beyond estatic to come home with these 2 finds....

an old pink farmtable!

now....I'm not usually a pink kinda girl....but this table is gorgeous....and you hardly ever see original pink painted farmtables....at least not here in corn country....and that may be why it's even more beautiful to me.

and here is my other find....a vintage french wine jug in it's original crate...can you believe this find! I almost fell over running to this thing. I had been looking for one forever....and I found it here....in the middle of cornstalks!

The sweet lady I bought this from said she found it full of wine in an old farmer's barn....she liked it...so he gave it to her free....the price she sold it to me.....$10.00.....gasp...right? If you look these up, they usually cost somewhere between $100 and $230 bucks....I paid $10.00....gasp...again!

These have to be 2 of my all-time favorite finds......eva!

Oh....and the pink farmtable wasn't even actually for sale....the guy had a bunch of stuff on it....treating her like she was some ugly ol' table. I saw a touch of pink under all the junk....and had to ask him if she was for sale....he said he wasn't planning on selling her....but that I could take her home with me for $60 bucks....I said....gett'er loaded.

Ahhhh....I love me a good flea market.....or even one that's not so good....but that you happen to find two of your dream finds.

fabric wallpaper

One of the questions I got asked most through comments and emails about my entryway makeover was....how'd you hang the fabric....here's the answer.

First step is to decide on some fabric....I love this Natural Hatley by Cabbages & Roses.

After you cut your fabric to the desired size, get a bucket and a bottle of starch and soak the fabric...this only takes a minute....just make sure the entire piece of fabric is wet.

Next....hang it up. The process of hanging it was pretty simple...although you may need an extra set of hands to help hold the fabric up while you adjust it. Smooth the wrinkles out and viola....fabric wallpaper. Imagine all the projects you could use this application for. The best part....when your ready to change it up....it literally peels away like a sticker leaving the walls mess free.

To finish up the edges we added some thin moulding and called it done!

Okay....so this is it....the big Cabbages and Roses reveal.

The wall above is where I used the gorgeous C&R Natural Hatley wallpaper. Did you notice....the risers and moulding are painted white.

Love the C&R Provence Toile pillows.

The photo above shows how I used C&R's Natural Hatley fabric to "wallpaper" my wall. The area above the wainscotting is actually fabric that I soaked in starch and hung on the wall. It's a fantastic way to have the feeling of wallpapaer, but without the commitment. Whenever your ready for a change, you just peel the fabric off like a sticker....and viola....you have clean walls. Just imagine all the gorgeous fabrics you could use this way....okay....so is your mind racing right now.

With some of the leftover Natural Hatley fabric I had....I sewed me up this beautiful tote.

Here's a better look at the tote I made. I followed the directions in Christina Strutt's book Romantic Home Sewing to make the tote. This book is great...there's so many cute projects.

So....there it is. I really loved this project....my goal was to do an unexpected room and try to use Cabbages & Roses fabric in a different way....and I'm so happy with the results.

mr. quakers has returned

Mr. Quackers has found his way home again. He had the honor of visiting Canada by way of the sweet Monique of Blueberries in the Fields blog....and from there was sent to visit the sweetest family in England who's mom writes the blog Scented Sweetpeas. Scented Sweetpeas even sent him home with a custom made coat and darling suitcase with stamps of the countries he visited.

My son was so happy to see him return and to read the letters they sent back telling us of his wonderful adventures afar.

Now that Mr. Quakers is back home....he went off to school today to share his stories with the class...and of course he was dressed in the finest blue coat.

I wanted to thank you both from the bottom of my heart for doing this project with my son...he and I truly....truly appreciate it!

I'm in need of some advice....so of course you guys were the first to come to mind when I wanted an honest opinion. We've been thinking of changing our countertops....no scratch that....I know we'll be changing our countertops. The reason....I really...really don't like the colors or the busyness of the granite we have on there now. Now...some of you may be like...what your gonna tear out perfectly good granite...and you'd sound just like the countertop place I called to ask them how much it would be to tear it out. Actually...the lady on the other end of the phone said in her 20 years of working there...she had never heard of anyone wanting to tear out granite...but I do. Some people may say...but it's in perfectly good condition...and it was expensive...and they'd be right...but it wouldn't have been what I would've choosen. I've tried to live with it...for almost 6 years now...and have come to the conclusion...that I will never like it...so it has to go.

Above is a photo of Rachel Ashwel's kitchen that was featured in her Shabby Chic Interiors book. The countertop that I've been dreaming about is a white marble similar to the one she has in her kitchen. I've done some research on marble countertops...and it seems that they are very hard to take care of....so here's where you come in. Do any of you have white marble countertops...and if so...how do they hold up. Although I'd love marble...I'm open to any other suggestions you may have for countertops...my only requirement...that they be white or very near white.

Here's a peek at my kitchen again....and I know that in the photo the granite doesn't look that bad...but trust me....it's kinda ugly. It has green, gray peach and black...not a pretty combo. I love that granite is natural and easy to maintain...but most of it is too loud for me...and I have yet to see one with no black.

So....let your opinions fly....I'd love to see what you guys have to say.

Ollie Update

Okay....can you believe Ollie's grown up this much in just 3 weeks.

Just look at that pose above....can you say goose model in the making. She even tilted her head like she was listening to me say..."okay stand still"...so cute!

By the end of our shoot.....she was tuckered out.

See....I told ya she grew a ton....only 3 weeks ago she fit in the little bowl...but if you check out the first photo again you can see she towers over the bowl now.

As soon as it warms up here...and she gets some big girl feathers....she'll be able to join the rest of the gang outside.

urban plains.....meets cabbages & roses

Join me if you will....on a little trip back in time....when I told you guys about a little thing called....the Urban Plains Project. While Mary and I were busy working on makeovers in our homes....we had the most wonderful thing happen....an opportunity to work with Cabbages & Roses. To say I was excited and honored would be a huge understatment. I adore Cabbages & Roses style and loved the chance to bring a bit of the English Country Style into my home.

So here's the space I decided to make over....my entryway. Above is my front door.....

and here's a couple photos with my notes as to what I'll be doing. I'll be wallpapering, painting and....

doing a special wall treatment with fabric and adding some beadboard and mouldings too. I hope that when it's all done, walking into my home will be like your stepping into an english farmhouse....that's the hope anyway.

And here's the yumminess I get to work with....gorgeous Natural Hatley Wallpaper, Provence Toile and Natural Hatley fabric.

So there's the plan.

a farmhouse t.v. armoire

Look what hubby made me.....

We were wanting something a little more "our" style to house our flat screen t.v. and seems how most all tv cabinets you find for flat screen tv's are kinda modern looking....we knew it would have to be something custom made. I drew up what I had in mind (we were thinking we wanted it to look farmhousey and kinda like a large crate) it's pefectly sized at only 13" deep and 7 feet wide.

After only a couple hours.....this is what I had....I adore it! He did an awesome job. The materials cost around $70.00 and I already had the white and aqua paint....as for the accessories.....I had all that already too....except those beautiful green jars...I bought those from Maria's gorgeous shop Dreamy Whites....I was inspired by Maria to add little pops of color to an all white decor....and her jars did the job perfectly.

See the tole lamps on top of the cabinet....I l.o.v.e. those and have had them for a long time.... those babies will be with me always.

the 2 geese....that's Genevieve and Annabelle....well sadly Genevieve passed away last fall. Annabelle adjusted well....she actually latched on to one of our chickens and followers her around everywhere. Now...while that may seem okay...Annabelle gets lonely when it's time to play in the water.....so.....

guess what....my hubby brought home this sweetie....

I'd like you to meet Ollie.

She or he is doing well...and being she's by herself....we carry her around with us....actually...right now as I type this....Ollie's in my robe pocket.

bedroom chandelier

While I'm busy working on another part of my home...again...I thought I'd share with you the chandelier I bought for my bedroom.

I've had it up for a couple of months now...and I love it.

It came with a few crystals...I added some more...along with some crystal chains. Love the beaded frame.

This is a new chandelier.... I looked f.o.r.e.v.e.r. for a vintage one....but couldn't find the right one....so new it was....but new's not so bad....as long as it has a vintage feel....it works for me.

My bedroom re-do is pretty much done...I'll share it with you soon.

I'm off to add some new goods to my etsy.

I received lots of comments and emails asking where exactly I purchased my supplies to make my copy of the Roost clock....so here's the list....

1. the 2" tall wood letters I purchased here....this was my reserved listing, but you could as him to make another listing for you.

2. the 1.5" wood letters were purchased from here.

3. the clock hands and mechanism were purchased here.

4. the silver metallic paint was from Michael's.

5. I purchased the blue adhesive putty from a local office supply store.

Now....just paint your wood numbers, clock hands and mechanism and hang.

That should do it....with these few supplies you too can make a clock....

just like this one.

I love getting into a made bed....

or so I thought....

lately....I've been getting into a messy bed.

You may not be able to tell from these photos....but I haven't really been making my bed lately....and I love how it looks all rumpled with the pillows just thrown on. Normally I'm a bit weird about making my bed...everything had to be lined up just right....and pulled tight with no wrinkles.

Now....it's a bit messy and wrinkly...and it looks so much more inviting to me....Yaaaay....that's one less chore I have to do every morning.

a diy clock project

Wanna make this clock for around $27.00.....then keep on readin'

I was inspired by Maria's clock over her fireplace....I l.o.v.e.d. it....but not the price ( Roost clock $110.00)

I'm the kinda girl who says...."I can so make that for cheaper"....and this is one occasion where I'm happy to say it looks like the real deal....but for a lot cheaper.

Here's some of the things you'll need to make it....adhesive putty to attach your numbers and clock mechanisim to the wall....

some silver metallic paint and brush to paint your numbers, clock hands and clock mechanisim....

some wood numbers...I purchased 2 different kinds of wooden numbers. (different fonts and sizes to make it look more like the Roost clock)

and a clock mechanisim and clock hands....and that's it. I purchased all the items except the paint on etsy....just look under wood numbers and clock mechanisims for the clock parts.

Now you too can have a fabulous clock for only $27.94 (it would've been less but I purchased extra wood numbers). The photo above is of my DIY clock (I decorated my cabinet similar to Maria's so you could see how alike the clocks really are) and the photo below is of Maria's clock.

So....here's the breakdown....

silver metallic paint $1.49
wood numbers in 2 different fonts and sizes $11.50
clock mechanisim and hands $14.95

for a grand total of $27.94

that's a savings of $82.06....pretty good huh? Oh...and just so ya know....this is a big clock...it measures 2 feet wide in the center.

Botanical Project

So here's what I did with the gorgeous antique botanicals Kelley sent me.

To say I'm a little embarassed out how plainly I "framed" them would be an understatment...but this is so me....I'm Plain Jane.

I have to tell ya...I really love how these look...they fit right in with my farmhouse style...and the cost....I spent $0.00.

We always have spare wood lying around....I always have clothespins....and I always have white paint.

So there you have it....four "framed" botanicals for zero bucks.....gotta love that.

A Quickie

This was a quickie makeover.....

I bought this chair a couple years ago with the intention of painting it right away....well of course it got pushed to the back of the furniture painting pile....but it's finally done.

This is how it look when I brought it home. It had great legs...and I loved the canning....and the blue velvet worked for me too. I knew the only thing I really had to do was paint it.

Have I told you I love white paint....

it truly breathes new life into old things.

So...Here's The Thing

To paint....or not to paint....that is the question.

The above photo is of my entryway....the front door is to the left and it opens up into my living room....but here's the thing....it seems a little wood heavy to me. Hubby and I have pondered painting it white for 4 years now.....and seems how we're unable to decide....we thought we'd ask you....cuz you guys always have great ideas. The only thing that's held me back is that this is the original stairway...which makes it 121 years old. I usually never have trouble painting wood...I've painted all the doors and 6 inch moulding all over the house....but for some reason, I haven't been able to paint this area. I know it would look wonderful...and match so much better with my style....but I think I just need your 2 cents.

This is how it would probaby look when we're done. The stairway above looks very similar to what we have...and I love the white against the wood floor treads....

Okay....so please....

tell me....

what would you do....

paint or not paint.

What's Inspiring Me Today

These are some of the images that are inspiring my newest makeovers....

a mix of grainsack and florals....

painted white furniture...

beautiful crystal chandeliers....

and lots of white...with pops of subtle color.

I'm trying to incorporate a little bit of all these rooms into my home.....

and the great thing has been that I've hardly had to buy anything.....

I was amazed to see that once I started freshening up my home....I had almost everything I needed already...love that!

My bedroom for example.....the only thing I had to purchase for that makeover was a pint of paint for $6.75 and a chandelier for $150.00....that't it. I didn't have to repaint walls, buy any new bedding....or furniture (just gave some pieces a facelift)....I just used things I had around the house. Looking at my inspiration photos helped me to gather the items I needed. I had many similar, if not the same things as my inspiration rooms....it's just that I had them scattered around the house....these photos helped me to focus on the "look" I was after....

and so far....I'm liking the results.

Still Busy...

Painting....re-arranging....sewing....and adding some stuff to my etsy.

I wasn't sure about these lady head vases...but I found 5 of them....and really like how they looked...so 50's and colorful.

I have tons....and tons of stuff to add to my etsy. I'm going to try to add new items at least a couple times a week.

Here's a few of the things I'll be adding....

some silver....

some beautiful lace curtains....

vintage quilts....

pretty floral plates....perfect for spring....

and some gorgeous....vintage euro shams....you know....the ones with beautiful bobbin lace and monograms....oh yeah....I've got loads of those....

Who Do Voodoo

Hey, this is Justin, Andrea's son. :P I was bored this Monday so I made one little voodoo type doll. I was inspired by Tim Burton's movies, like Nine.

I made one doll, that led to two, and then three. But I'm not very good with the sewing machine though. So, I just practice by making more and more dolls.

I hope to get better with da sewing machine, so I can make more stuff. Then I'll try my luck by selling 'em. So I know if its a good money maker. :P

and that my friends....is my big boy (14 to be exact)....love him!

I have to tell you....I love his dolls.

They're perfectly cute 'n' creepy....cuz I don't know about you guys....but dolls with button eyes and sewn mouths...is just plain creepy.

Busy Bee

I've been quite the busy bee lately....

sewing lots of custom orders....

painting....

and dreaming....

of spring.....

and color.

Along with all this....

I've also been busy planning some new designs for pillows, napkins and other linens.

And you know what comes with spring.....right....

the urge to re-paint and re-do....

now with that being said....

I'm also busy changin' up the rooms in this old farmhouse....

yep....you heard right....helping Mary with our Urban Plains project has got me itchin' to do some work to to this old gal....

and no I'm not talking about me guys...I'm talking about the house....geesh.

I know...I know....it was less than a year ago that I re-did the house....

well...in decorating years....that's an eternity....

so I'm on a quest....to re-vamp and re-fresh.

This week my sweet friend Sue came over for a visit....and look what she brought me.

This amazing basket filled with vintage goodness. She tucked in all kinds of little treats...like...

this vintage chinese paintbrush...love it....

old clothespins....

vintage seam binding, tatted lace, doilies, beautiful white dishes, vintage sewing needles from england, old wooden spools....not to mention the beauty in the middle...a petite ironstone pitcher.

She put it all together so beautifully.

After gawking at it for some time....I told her she needs to open up an etsy shop and sell these....isn't that a great idea....gift baskets full of vintage goodness to give as a gift...or keep for yourself.

She could customize them by color...theme...hobby....great idea, huh.

The Urban Plains Project

I'm sure you all know the fabulous Mary from Urban Farmgirl....well I've had the pleasure of getting to know her better over the last year....and I've come to the conclusion....that she's my long lost twin sister....or at least if I could have a sister...I'd choose her.

While talking one day....she mentioned she was going to re-do her guest bedroom....and she thought it would be fun if we did it together....never mind the fact the we've never "met" or that we live 422 miles from each other. I was so on board to help....I love me a makeover.

Are you wondering where the title of this post fits in....well I've dubbed our collaboration....The Urban Plains Project...you know....a little bit her...a little bit me.

So....on to some inspiration....

I've been doin' some work behind the scenes here...and wanted to show you what's new.

I've decided to sell my vintage goods on etsy only...with the main reason being it's hard to keep the website's vintage page stocked. I received a not so nice email some time ago saying basically that....why is everything always sold. Now....I know the person was right in what they said...I just didn't think it was nice the way they said it. So to fix the problem, I thought etsy would work perfectly...because what you see is available.

My website is still open and I'm keeping it stocked with pillows, paper goods, farmhouse goods and such....but if your looking for vintage....you can visit my etsy.

The Marshmallow Recipe

After getting quite a few emails and comments yesterday about my marshmallows....I thought I'd come back today to share the recipe with you.

The recipe is courtesy of Martha Stewart.....and you can find it here....or down below. I hope you'll try it. I was pleasantly surprised at how well they turned out....I thought marshmallows would be some complicated....rocket science kinda recipe...but it's far from it.

Vanilla Marshmallows

Makes about 16 large marshmallows

Ingredients

Nonstick cooking spray
3 (1/4-ounce) packages unflavored gelatin
1/2 cup cold water
2 cups granulated sugar
2/3 cup light corn syrup
1/4 teaspoon coarse salt
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract, plus 1 vanilla bean, scraped
Confectioners' sugar, sifted, for coating

Directions

1. Lightly spray a 9-by-9-inch baking pan with cooking spray. Line pan with plastic wrap, leaving a 2-inch overhang on all sides; set aside.

2. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, sprinkle gelatin over 1/2 cup cold water; let stand for 10 minutes. In a medium saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, and 1/4 cup water. Place saucepan over medium-high heat and bring to a boil; boil rapidly for 1 minute. Remove from heat, and, with the mixer on high, slowly pour the boiling syrup down the side of the mixer bowl into gelatin mixture. Add salt and continue mixing for 12 minutes.

3. Add vanilla extract and vanilla bean seeds; mix until well combined. Spray a rubber spatula or your hands with cooking spray. Spread gelatin mixture evenly into pan using prepared spatula or your hands. Spray a sheet of plastic wrap with cooking spray and place, spray side down, on top of marshmallows. Let stand for 2 hours.

4. Carefully remove marshmallows from pan. Remove all plastic wrap and discard. Cut marshmallows into 2-inch squares using a sprayed sharp knife. Place confectioners' sugar in a large bowl. Working in batches, add marshmallows to bowl and toss to coat. Marshmallows can be stored in an airtight container up to 3 days.

I've Been A Home Cookin' Mama

So....do you remember this post?

Well....since that venting episode I had....

I've been on a home cookin' rampage....so much so....

I've pretty much been making everything from scratch....right down to the marshmallows.

Even the hot cocoa's homemade....yum!

Now....I haven't just been cooking sweets ya know....I've been making pizza dough from scratch....spaghetti and meatballs....chicken piccata....and potato cheese soup....just to name a few.

I've been using lots of fresh ingredients....and changing up the menu quite a bit.....and you know what....my boys have been e.a.t.i.n.g....just a moment while I do the happy dance.

It may have been partially my fault....you know....them not eating....because I was in a cooking rut....

well....not anymore.

I've been trying lots of new recipes from here...here and here....and they've all been really good.

One of my favorites has been Pioneer Woman's pizza dough...it's so easy....inexpensive....and good.

I am now a happier mom....

what mom wouldn't be....

when she hears her kids say..."mom....you got anymore?"....

doing the happy dance....again.

Freshening Up The New Year

With the New Year upon us....I started looking around my home....and thinkin'....she needs a little freshening up....

like a new farmhouse metal headboard {so happy to finally have one}....

a little tweaking with the bed linens and sidetables....

I made this wreath for Christmas using some old baling wire and some boxwood garland I had on hand....

I loved it so much....I just may keep it up all year.

I fluffed my eiderdowns....I love me some beautiful eiderdowns.

I changed up my dresser....just shoppin' around the house.....

I love this huge spool of rope....it's the perfect color and adds so much texture....plus.....it's a great way to hold some old photos of my dad.

Yep....I've been freshening up this old farmhouse.....and drawing up plans for some outdoor makeovers....is it wrong to already be wishing for spring and summer ;o)

Please don't mind the dining room...it doesn't look that great....instead, focus in on Sophie our White German Shepherd...isn't she cute...and she matches my house...that's just a bonus.

And here's a little peek at our Christmas tree. It's rather bare, as the tree is huge...like 12 feet around...but I rather like it's plainness.

Off to have some hot cocoa....with lots of whipped cream.

When Someone Gets You.....

When someone gets you.....doesn't it just put a big ol' smile on your face....well, it does mine. I've had the pleasure of getting to know Mary from Urban Farmgirl for a little while....and I just love her! Our tastes are so similar....and when I recently received a package from her I was utterly surprised. I had mentioned that my birthday was soon (well, now it's past...whoohoo...I'm 39) and she quietly...kinda like a ninja...sent me the most gorgeous package. I was in awe of how she wrapped everything....from the packaging alone....I know she gets me. This is what was in the package....I know huh....isn't it all just beautiful....man....does that girl now me or what. She even sent me some amazing yarn...but that's not in the photo...because it's already been all used up....like the same day I received it.

And...you know what....if you like what you see above....you better put on your runnin' shoes and jam on over to her new etsy shop...cuz it's filled with beautiful things.

Oh....and I just thought I'd throw in this photo....because it's so darn cute. My cats have a new neighbor...Charlie our rooster has made his home with Molly (shown) and Emily (not shown) our cats. He's our oldest guy and seems how we have a few young fellows (roosters) in the chicken coop, he's decided he doesn't want to bunk with them any longer....so he's moved himself into our garage. Spending his nights under a warm heat lamp with his 2 new girls...and the cats just love him. Yesterday after I took this photo I walked in and he had fallen asleep all snuggled up in the same crate as Molly...cute huh?

When The Weather Outside is Frightful....

okay....so the weather outside is truly frightful...I know the photo above from my kitchen window doesn't look like it...but it is.....it's blizzard like with 50 mile an hour winds.

As if I hadn't been sewing enough (I've been sewing up a storm with special orders and Christmas gifts) I thought today I'd stop...if for only a little bit....to sew something for myself.

I made me this. I've been wanting a linen bread bag (or a le pain bag in french) for some time....and thought today's the day. I don't know about you...but I'm so lovin' the red embroidery...it really gives it a french touch don't you think....and I realize that the embroidery is kinda wonky and not perfect...but I gotta say...that's what I love most about it...it truly looks handmade.

Okay...that's enough sewing for me....I gotta get back to sewing for others now....as in this new pillow I just made....you can find it here or here.

I'm burnt out....

on figuring out what to cook for my family.

I can't tell you how many times I've cooked dinner....and half the family likes it and the other half doesn't....it drives me crazy....after so many times of this happening....I just kinda feel like....well....like not cooking.

What's a mom to do!

I'm not one to cook different meals for everybody....when I cook dinner....if you like....you get dinner....if you don't....you get cereal.

I know that may sound harsh....but you can't please everyone....especially my family at dinner time.

Does anyone else have this problem?

I actually had a bit of a fit tonight about dinner....

so much so that I refused to cook dinner!

Not really....I cooked....if you call mac and cheese from the box cooking.

And I went a little dramatic when I said...."I'm done cooking....it's t.v. dinners from now on"....really...I truly said that....can you believe it. We haven't had a t.v. dinner in the house for years....and that's what I resorted to.

So what's a mom to do?

Any suggestions?

While Sipping Hot Chocolate.....

17 Years Ago....

17 years ago today....I married my best friend.

I know this should be a lovey dovey post...

but to tell you the truth...I'm not a lovey dovey kinda girl....I'm more of a dude kinda girl....remember this post.

Here's another example of me being more dude like....

when we woke this morning....neither of us told each other happy anniversary....

I actually forgot (I mean I did know it was coming up... I just didn't realize it was already here) until I turned on my computer and the date said November 2oth....holy cow I thought....it's our anniversary.

After we wished each other happy anniversary....my hubby went out for donuts and came home with a rose and a card....

the funny thing is he sealed the card and didn't write anything in it....no name or anything....

I started laughing and told him we should use this card every year.....we could just write 2010 on the card and then next year re-use it....just cross out 2010 and write 2011....and so on.

Hubby gave me the crazy look.....but I'm totally serious....

I mean....I do love to reuse and recycle.

Anyway....I'm not too into celebrating anniversaries....as he makes everyday special....so there's no need to celebrate it on only one day....when we celebrate our love everyday.
